Virtual Race Info | The Great Race

One Great Weekend is Now Virtual

In case you missed it, we shared on May 15 that the 2020 Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race and Dollar Bank Junior Great Race are going VIRTUAL as part of the city's efforts to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus. The Great Race is one of Pittsburgh’s greatest traditions, and we’re excited that we’re able to continue that tradition this year in a new format!

REGISTRATION IS OPEN - RUN WITH US VIRTUALLY!

Registration just reopened for the VIRTUAL Great Race and Dollar Bank Junior Great Race, and we want YOU to join us in keeping this Pittsburgh tradition going! If you sign up to run with us virtually, we’ll mail you your finisher medal (which you’ve earned!) and your race shirt. We promise to be there with you virtually and cheer you on while you run! Be sure to tag us on social media and use the hashtag #MYGreatRace so we can celebrate your race with you.

One Great Weekend September:

You can complete your race whenever and wherever you wish, but we will officially host the Virtual 2020 Great Race and Virtual 2020 Dollar Bank Junior Great Race throughout the entire month of September! Beginning September 1, you will be able to submit your race time (although this is not required) via the Race Roster website anytime throughout September. Stay tuned to your email and our social channels!

One GREAT Challenge, benefitting Amyloidosis Research:

As an extra — and BRAND NEW  — challenge, we invite YOU to participate in both the 5K and 10K in the month of September! One GREAT Challenge participants will earn the Great Race tech shirt, the 10K medal, the 5K medal, the One GREAT Challenge medal, as well as a One GREAT Challenge t-shirt. That’s THREE medals and TWO shirts!

Plus, $5 from each One GREAT Challenge registration will be donated to support amyloidosis research. Each year, the Great Race donates $1 from every Great Race and Dollar Bank Junior Great Race registration to the Richard S. Caliguiri Amyloidosis Fund, a fund held by the Pittsburgh Foundation that is dedicated to supporting medical research, and One GREAT Challenge participants will contribute even more to this important cause.

When signing up for your race in Race Roster, you will have the option to add-on One GREAT Challenge during the registration process for just $25. If you are already registered, you can log in to your Race Roster account and edit your registration to add One GREAT Challenge.

OPTIONS FOR ALREADY REGISTERED PARTICIPANTS

If you are already registered for the 2020 event, you will have two options:

1. The first is to run virtually. To take advantage of this option, all you need to do is run your race wherever you want whenever you want. We’ll mail you your finisher medal (which you’ve earned!) and your race shirt.

2. Your second option is to receive a refund of your registration. If you decide that you do not want to participate virtually, the City of Pittsburgh is pleased to offer you the opportunity to request a refund of your registration fee (less any processing fees or referral fees already refunded). While it is not our policy to offer refunds, we are making an exception for those who do not want to participate virtually. We completely understand, and we hope to see you at the start line in 2021.

Any runner who wishes to have their race registration refunded will need to access their Race Roster account and edit their event registration no later than 11:59 p.m. on Friday, June 5, 2020

  1. Sign in to your Race Roster account
  2. Click the blue Edit Registration button
  3. Under the Registrations Questions tab, select “Refund.”
  4. Click Save & Exit to finalize your choice.

Please note that the refund will be in the amount originally paid, less any processing fees and/or referral earnings already refunded. If you are registered for more than one event, you will need to select a refund for each specific event (or you can choose to do one virtual and receive the refund for the other). If you registered more than one family member through your account and wish to receive a refund for everyone, you will need to request a refund for each individual person for each individual event.

You can expect to receive your refund no later than June 19, 2020.

If you do not request a refund by June 5, your registration will automatically be switched to the virtual event.

We are here for our runners! If you can’t find what you’re looking for, please email us at info@rungreatrace.com with any questions you have.

Questions & Answers

I want to run virtually. How do I do it?
You can head out on a run to keep this Pittsburgh tradition going whenever, wherever! If you want to run your race virtually, you don’t need to change anything on your registration - you will be automatically switched to the virtual version of your event and receive your medal and shirt.

Make sure you share your virtual race on your social channels and use #MYGreatRace to let everyone know about your race and how you are keeping this Pittsburgh tradition going!

When will I receive my medal and shirt?
Stay tuned!

If I participate in One Great Challenge, do I have to complete both the 10K and 5K in the same day?
No, you can complete each distance whenever you feel most comfortable doing so.
I want a refund. How do I get it?
Any runner who was registered prior to May 15, 2020 who wishes to have their race registration refunded will need to access their Race Roster account and edit their event registration no later than 11:59 p.m.on June 5, 2020

You can expect to receive your refund no later than June 19, 2020.

Additionally, if your credit card information has changed since you originally registered, please reach out to us at info@rungreatrace.com no later than 11:59 p.m. on Friday, June 5, 2020 so that we can update it accordingly in our system to ensure you receive your refund.

If a runner does not request a refund by June 5, his/her/their registration will automatically be switched to the virtual event.
Will my child still be able to participate in the Dollar Bank Junior Great Race and receive their shirt and medal?
Yes, all Dollar Bank Junior Great Race events will be virtual. This includes the One-Mile Family Fun Run, Tot Trot, and Diaper Dash.

Will my child still be eligible for the Kids of STEEL Challenge Medal?
If your child completed the Virtual 2020 Chick-fil-A Pittsburgh Kids Marathon and the 2020 Fleet Feet Liberty Mile, he/she/they will need to complete the Virtual 2020 Dollar Bank Junior Great Race to receive their 2020 Kids of STEEL Challenge medal.
I received a seeded position for the 2020 race based on my qualifying time at the 2019 event. Will that position transfer for the 2021 event?
Yes, all seeded runner positions will transfer to the 2021 event.

Will there be awards?
While there won’t be any timed awards for the 2020 event, we do plan to have several contests with prizes throughout the month of September! Stay tuned to your email and our social channels for more information!

Where do I submit my results?
We will share a link to post your results by Sept. 1. Please note: submission is NOT required in order to get your race medal and shirt.

Will the results be verified?
No, results for the virtual Great Race and Dollar Bank Junior Great Race will not be verified and there will not be official awards or course records. However, there will be contests and other fun prizes on social media!

I received a free race entry as a prize, but I don’t want to race virtually. Can I defer that registration to next year?
All runners have the same two options: race with us virtually in 2020 or receive a refund. Since you received your registration for free, we can’t offer you a refund. You will automatically be enrolled in the virtual option, and we will still send you your medal and shirt.

Can I still run the race on Sept. 27, 2020 downtown on the planned course?
We can’t tell you when and where to participate virtually; however, we strongly encourage you to avoid the official race course for several safety reasons:
  1. The roads will not be closed, and some parts of the course may not have sidewalks on which you can run off the road;
  2. You will have no support: there will be no hydration stations, security, or medical aid -- you will be completely on your own; and
  3. One of the reasons we had to cancel the event this year is to help facilitate social distancing, and we ask all runners to support those efforts so that we can return to an in-person event in 2021 stronger than ever before!

If you’re in Pittsburgh, you have several beautiful parks and trails on which you can run your race if you want to do so outside, and we strongly encourage all of our virtual runners to choose to run their race in a place that is safe for everyone.
