More than 7,000 Runners and Walkers Celebrate the 45th Anniversary of the Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race


PITTSBURGH (September 25, 2022) – More than 7,000 runners and walkers braved the rainy weather to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race. A beloved Pittsburgh fall tradition and the largest 10K in Pennsylvania, the race attracted participants from 35 states and Washington D.C., as well as six countries.


“The rainy weather did not dampen the spirits of the thousands of runners and walkers who achieved their fitness goals today and crossed the finish line in Point State Park,” said Brian Katze, race director of the Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race. “Today proves why Pittsburghers continue to love this event and have kept this race going strong for 45 years.” 


More than 250 runners completed the One Great Challenge and earned an extra medal by completing both the 5K and 10K. Additionally, 18 men known as the “Perfect Great Racers” crossed the finish line today and an additional three participated virtually, marking the 45th time they have all completed the 10K race.


Local runner Nick Wolk, of Squirrel Hill, repeated as the men’s 10K champion with a time of 29:58. Jennifer Bigham, also of Squirrel Hill, won the women’s 10K race in 34:37, claiming the crown for the fourth time. She previously won the race in 2016, 2017 and 2019. In the 10K handcycle division, Rory Cooper, of Gibsonia, Pa., finished first with a time of 27:36.


Winning the 5K race for the fourth time, Clay Burnett from Chagrin Falls, Ohio, crossed the finish line at 15:11. He previously won the race in 2015, 2017, and 2019. Jordan Hasay, a first-time champion from San Luis Obispo, Ca., won the women’s 5K with a time of 16:56. 


Each year the Great Race donates $1 from every Great Race and Dollar Bank Junior Great Race registration to the Richard S. Caliguiri Amyloidosis Fund, a fund held by the Pittsburgh Foundation that is dedicated to supporting medical research. Amyloidosis is a rare protein disorder in which one or more organ systems in the body accumulate deposits of abnormal proteins known as amyloid.
