6 Great Race Traditions the PERFECT Great Racers Do

The Perfect Great Racers are a group of 21 men that have run in every single Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race since the beginning -- starting back in 1977! Here are some traditions they have done through the years on race day!

1.    “The only tradition I have still going on (and I’m sure you’re hearing this from others) is warming up in the cemetery across the street. Many of us do.” - Tom Abbott

2.    “Before the race, I enjoy saying hello and gathering with fellow Perfect Great Racers for our start line photo.  I also look forward to getting with my son Keith and a few other speedy runners who usually run well enough to be seeded for the 10K run.” - Ken Balkey

3.    “I always warmup before the race in Homewood Cemetery.” - Bob Costello

4.    “On race day, I always drink a coffee from McDonald’s about two hours before race time. In previous years, my late wife, Georgia, and I would enjoy a wonderful pasta dinner at the Spaghetti Warehouse in the Strip District.” - Carl Hatfield, winner of inaugural Great Race in 1977

5.    “For a warm up on race day, I always run to the start line that’s about 1.5 miles from my home in Edgewood.” - Dick Monheim

6.    “I run back to the start each year, much slower than old days.” - Don Slusser
