Nearly 10,000 Runners and Walkers Celebrate One GREAT Weekend at the 49th Annual Richard S. Caligiuri City of Pittsburgh Great Race Presented by Highmark

PITTSBURGH  – Nearly 10,000 runners and walkers crossed the finish line this weekend during the 49th Annual Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race presented by Highmark, continuing a Pittsburgh tradition that brings together participants of all ages and abilities. Pennsylvania’s largest 10K attracted runners and walkers from 39 states and Washington, D.C., for a celebration of fitness, community and the city of Pittsburgh.

“Each year, the Great Race brings together generations of runners and walkers to celebrate movement, community and the city we’re proud to call home,” said Brian Katze, race director. “Seeing nearly 10,000 participants come together this weekend is a testament to the enduring legacy of this event and the special place it holds in Pittsburgh. As we look ahead to the Great Race’s 50th anniversary in 2027, we’re excited to celebrate this incredible tradition and everyone who has helped make it a Pittsburgh tradition.” 

In the 10K, Aiden Gonder, of Enola, Pa., claimed the overall title with a time of 31:33, while Chloe Bonson, of Pittsburgh, earned top honors in the women’s division with a time of 34:46.

In the 5K, Mark Shannon, of Twinsburg, Ohio, crossed the finish line first with a time of 14:14, while Chloe LoCastro, of Pittsburgh, captured the women’s title in 17:51.

This year’s event also featured a record 574 participants completing the One GREAT Challenge, finishing both the 5K and 10K to earn an additional medal. Sixteen men known as the “Perfect Great Racers” also reached a remarkable milestone, crossing the 10K finish line for the 49th consecutive year and continuing a tradition that dates back to the inaugural Great Race in 1977.

The Great Race Turns 50 in 2027

The Great Race will celebrate its 50th anniversary Sept. 25–26, 2027. Participants can secure their spot early during a special two-day registration period, Sept. 27–28, 2026, and the first 2,500 will receive a commemorative 50th anniversary hat.
